Supervising Professional Staff or Graduate Assistants
The documents in this resource were designed for use with both full-time professional staff and Graduate Assistants, but any parts can be adapted and customized based on your needs. This pack includes:
a welcome letter to send to those you supervise
a variety of opening week preparation checklists
a student staff Weekly Report template
These RD Expectations primarily came from the main Office of Residence Life at one of the schools where I worked but I had added a few customizations. These are high-level expectations that can be used for either Graduate Assistants who serve as Hall Directors or Resident Directors.
Use this information as reference material or adapt it based on your needs. Words highlighted in yellow should be customized to your individual situation.
This schedule was used at an institution of about 8,000 students. We had 4 Graduate Assistants and 2 Assistant Directors who served as in-hall staff. Use this information as reference material or adapt it based on your needs. Words highlighted in yellow should be customized to your individual situation.
ADDITION MADE (8.29.2023) - Added another Pro Staff Training Schedule to the bottom of this document
Supervising Resident Assistants
This agenda gives some ideas of topics I discussed regularly in my one-on-one meetings with my RAs. Adapt as necessary.

tips for evaluating RAs (or any staff members, in fact)
some common evaluation pitfalls.
This staff appraisal features sections for mid-year and end-of-year evaluations. It is generic and uses the term "student employee" so you can customize it with your staff titles. I have used this for Resident Assistants and Head Resident Assistants.
This staff appraisal is a revised, more detailed version of Example #1.
RA Semester Report
I gave this 10-question report to Resident Assistants at the end of the Fall Semester so I could learn about their experience and to make improvements to the RA experience, processes or procedures for the Spring Semester. I did not directly supervise these RAs (they were supervised by an undergraduate RD) so I wanted to know how things were going in that area of campus.

Staff Expectations
These RA Expectations are one version I have used in my career. I used them for a staff of 18 RAs who served in a large, upper-class apartment building.
This document consists of 3 items:
General Staff Expectations from the Office of Residence Life
RA Performance Expectations from the Office of Residence Life
A Staff Sanction Chart
I did not create these and these are not specific to my staff. These were from the central Office of Residence Life and set for all Resident Assistants.
